Web Navigation, Search and Evaluation
Resources and Examples
Directories are used when you want to locate general
information on a broad topic. They are arranged by subject and usually will
refer to the "top level" of Web sites, rather than to individual Web site pages.
Search Engines are useful when you know specific pieces of
the information that you are seeking, such as titles, phrases, technical
language, a known document, image or place.
Meta Search Engines allow you to search multiple databases.
They are useful for hard-to-find information.
Specialty Search Engines are used for locating specialized
information.
Web Portals are not search engines, but do provide a wealth
of content and services.
